SEOUL, 11 April (UPI) – Kingdom Under Fire, South Korea’s internationally popular online video game, will operate on the blockchain this year. Bloom Technology, the game’s creator, said there has been successfully running games on internally created blocks called Locus Chain without relying on game servers.
Kingdom Under Fire was first released in the early 2000s by South Korean companies Blueside and Phantagram in more than 30 countries, attracting fans in the United States and Europe.
“I think historically, Locus Chain was the first public blockchain to operate servers for online games. This is a technological breakthrough,” Bloom Technology CEO Lee Sang-yoon told UPI News Korea.
“In appearance, we have proven that gaming services can exist in decentralized and technological networks,” he said.
Bloom Technology says it will allow users to play Kingdom Under Fire on the blockchain by the end of this year.
The head of the Digital Finance Research Institute Moon Young -bae – South Korea’s top blockchain expert – said many services will use blockchain technology down the road.
“Public blockchain has its strengths as a decentralized network, but it also contains drawbacks, such as a slowing speed when the number of users increases,” Moon said in a phone interview.
“But in the last few years, there have been some technological developments, including securing decentralization and speed at the same time, as demonstrated by Locus Chain. I think more innovative blockchain technologies should be continued,” he said.
