Hanspeter Jaberg, a Swiss venture capitalist, told Insider:
Howells plans to submit two proposals to city officials based on how much landfill he can check.
He specializes in the areas of landfill excavation, waste management and data extraction, including one advisor who worked for a company that recovered lost data from the black boxes of the crashed Columbia space shuttle8. We have assembled a team of human experts. .
The huge budget includes provisions for security in the form of two robotic “spot” dogs recording CCTV patrols in the evenings to prevent other opportunistic treasure hunters from accessing search sites at night. to
Alongside local pickers, mechanical arms are used to filter the garbage.
“We’re trying to get this project to full commercial standards,” the 36-year-old man told Insider.
“We don’t want to destroy the environment in any way. We would rather leave everything in better shape.”
“I can’t help him with this matter.”
Despite the fact that the hardware sat in a landfill for nearly a decade, the former IT worker is confident it can be restored to working order.
He told Insider that he estimates there is an 80-90% chance of recovering bitcoins if there are no cracks in the components called “platters,” which are disks made of glass or metal that hold data.
To allay environmental concerns about the project, Howells says they plan to “build a solar or wind farm on top of the landfill once the project is complete.”
Howells has said that if the money is recovered, he will keep 30 percent of the Bitcoin and distribute the rest to his team and local causes.
A spokesperson for the Newport City Council said, “Since 2014, the Newport City Council has been contacted numerous times about the potential recall of some of its IT hardware that is said to contain bitcoin. there are,” he said.
“The first was several months after Howells first noticed that the hardware was missing.”
“It could cost millions of pounds to dig up a landfill, store the waste and dispose of it, but there is no guarantee it will be found or still in good working order.”
“The council has also told Howells on numerous occasions that drilling is not possible under our license and that drilling itself would have a significant environmental impact on the surrounding area.”
“Even if you agree with his demands, there is still the question of who will pay if the hard drive is missing or the data is irretrievably damaged.”
“It is therefore clear that we cannot help him in this matter.”
