Four facilities in Kampong Melabau and one facility in Kampong Serusop were found to have unauthorized electrical connections or diversion for cryptocurrency mining operations.
They were discovered Wednesday during a 30-person collaboration by the Department of Electrical Services (DES). Participating in the operation were the Brunei Royal Police (RBPF), Fire and Rescue Department (FRD) and Autoriti Elektrik Negara Brunei Darussalam (AENBD).
The operation, which also targeted Kampung Lug, was aimed at minimizing electrical and fire hazards and preventing unauthorized electrical connections.
Unauthorized electrical connections can result in unsafe wiring, resulting in fire, loss of life, and property damage, according to the press release.
Unauthorized diversion of electricity and tampering with meters is an offense under Section 71 Section 3 and Section 9 of the Electricity Act and, if convicted, shall be punishable by fine not exceeding BND50,000 and imprisonment not exceeding three years; or both.
DES has invited the public to report suspected unauthorized electrical connections to 123 Darussalam or send an email to des.info@des.gov.bn.
