The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has announced plans to build an online-based metaverse campus called Metaxt. The institution takes the first step towards this goal by building a mixed virtual reality classroom that allows students from other latitudes to participate in classes as if they were in the same space. The virtual classroom hosts the launch of the new Guangzhou campus.

The application, called Methkust, will allow the institution’s students from different latitudes to participate in classes and events as if they were in the same venue.

The first event in which this Metaverse-based system will be tested will be the opening of the university’s Guangzhou campus in September next year. Pan Hui, a professor of computational media and arts on the Guangzhou campus, said:

Since there are many people overseas who cannot attend, we will host it in the Metaverse.

Benefits of the virtual approach

Institutions have explained the benefits that metaverse-based classrooms and campuses can offer over traditional remote classroom setups that use video conferencing tools such as Zoom. Hui said the Metaverse environment provides more interaction for students and makes them feel as if they are attending a real-world class. He explained:

With zoom, it feels like you’re just looking at a 2D screen. But through virtual reality, you can feel as if you were there. I think communication is very important for learning. Learning outcomes are enhanced by how you interact with the students around you.

In addition, Hu said that this new focus promotes a sense of “unity and participation” that cannot be achieved otherwise due to geographical constraints. To achieve this unified virtual campus, the university will install a set of sensors and cameras to feed the information to the Metaverse system.

Recently, the University of Tokyo announced Integration of Metaverse technology into the learning process. The agency reported that it will begin offering introductory engineering lessons in the Metaverse later this year.
