• New ITU focus group pursues interoperability
The International Telecommunications Union (ITU), the United Nations agency responsible for global communications and technology, has established a group of experts working towards international technical standards for the Metaverse.
The focus group is a collection of technical standards that will help create the underlying technology and business ecosystems that will drive market entry, innovation and cost efficiency in a sector that some industry analysts expect to grow to a value close to $800. It provides a place to build a foundation. $1 billion by 2024.
ITU Executive Director Doreen Bogdan-Martin says the Metaverse and its layers of technology will help human development and progress.
“This ITU focus group work is the first step in ensuring that these technologies work well and work for everyone. should be fully understood and addressed,” she said.
In the Metaverse Standardization Roadmap, the ITU is mandated by governments to expand digital connectivity and foster sustainable digital transformation.
The ITU focus group is committed to creating a roadmap for setting technical standards for making metaverse services and applications interoperable, delivering a high-quality user experience, ensuring security, and protecting personal data. I am aiming.
Seizo Onoe, Director General of the ITU Telecommunications Standardization Bureau, said: This focus group will support collaboration to envision technology use cases for the metaverse, determine relevant technical requirements, and develop standards that help meet these requirements on a global scale. ”
Unique within the United Nations family, the ITU brings together 193 Member States and over 900 member companies, universities, and global members of international and regional organizations to address issues such as technical standardization.
ITU Focus Groups are open to all interested professionals and accelerate standardization by leading focused research in areas of rapidly evolving strategic importance. The Metaverse Focus Group will operate for one year, performing “pre-standard” work as a basis for developing new ITU standards.
To facilitate the development of cohesive metaverse standards, focus groups aim to elaborate common terms and definitions and to facilitate cooperation among relevant standards bodies. This group reports to the ITU Telecommunication Standardization Advisory Group.
Abdurahman M. Al Hassan, chairman of the ITU Telecommunications Standardization Advisory Group at Saudi Arabia’s National Cyber Security Agency (NCA), said the establishment of the focus group is a timely effort to define security and standards that contribute to security. said it is very important for Build an interoperable metaverse, enabling growth and prosperity. ”
The focus group will meet for the first time, hosted by the NCA, on 8-9 March 2023 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, following the ITU Forum on Metaverse Adoption on 7 March, co-hosted by ITU and NCA.
