Newberry artists bring the world of cryptocurrencies and virtual markets downtown.
Newbury, South Carolina — A museum in Newbury is working to bring art into the digital age by incorporating non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
NFTs are digital assets that virtually represent art, music, and more.
of NFT Museum Opening downtown in 2021, it aims to create a space for digital creators to showcase their work and educate the community about the process.
Robert Matheson, who owns the museum, said interactions with NFTs start with a digital wallet and then access a virtual marketplace where NFTs are sold.
“We use cryptocurrencies for trading,” said Matheson.
Cryptocurrency is a digital form of payment. According to Matheson, online marketplaces will allow digital his artists to register their work on something called blockchain, which will result in fewer imitators and more money to hold onto.
“Nobody wants a copy of the original artist’s work, right? They want the real thing, and blockchain makes that possible,” said Matheson. “Prove ownership”
The NFT Museum is a place where you can see digital works in both projected digital and physical form.
Neville Glover has been running restaurants in Newbury for several years and recently started creating NFT after meeting Matheson.
“I think everyone will be surprised when they see it,” Glover said. “It’s just what I enjoy.”
So far, he says he’s earned about $1,000.
Jerry Laine was also interested in digital art. A Newbury County resident has written a children’s book featuring his art work digitally. He hopes that the museum’s interaction will inspire more artists and members of his community to get involved.
“There’s a movement out there, and I think that movement says that we need to be part of it and accept what’s going on,” Lane said.
Gage Fowler was a former Newbury student visiting the area. He said the museum provides an opportunity for the city to be on the cutting edge of the world of technology.
“It’s different from normal art like canvas or painting,” said Fowler. “So let’s go to the future.”
The museum is located at 1110 Harrington Street in Newbury. Visiting hours are from 12:00 to 16:00 by appointment only.
